A teacher has been condemned for dressing her young son up as Adolf Hitler for a Halloween party. The mom, named as Janet Arsanian, dressed her boy up in the Nazi costume and fake Hitler mustache at a ‘Trunk or Treat’ event in Boulder City, NV on Saturday A snap of the costume has since gone viral, with many branding it racist and distasteful.
Metro US is not naming the boy, but (MOMS NAME) has insisted she did not set out to offend. In a since-deleted Facebook post, she said: ‘I’m the proud parent of the boy in the Hitler costume and my son didn’t mean to upset anyone. ‘He needed a last-minute costume and he put that together today. No we don’t worship Hitler or agree with what he did.’
Photographs of the child have stirred up backlash by members of the community, with many questioning whether she should keep her job as a teacher at SCHOOL NAME ‘Interesting to see a #CCSD teacher pridefully dressing her 13-year-old as Hitler,’ wrote one Facebook poster. ‘These nazi sympathizers are supposed to be educating our kids.’
Helena Vece is a 71-year-old Boulder City resident whose parents survived the holocaust. Her grandchildren showed her pictures of the costume – which she found incredibly offensive. ‘I know what my mom and dad went through,” Vece told the Las-Vegas Review Journal. ‘I know what I went through (with) them as a child, I know what their memories are. I was born in Germany after the war, and to see this was so offensive.’ The Clark County School District was made aware of the incident – but would not say whether the mother would be disciplined. ‘We expect all of our employees to be sensitive to the varied cultural backgrounds of our students and community,’ a spokeswoman said in a statement.
